Ministry Spotlight: Small Group Launch

Small Groups are a critical piece of Hillside’s DNA. As it says on our website, “Small groups aim to be the best context for fellowship, spiritual formation, and mission. [Small Groups are] a core avenue that we use to mobilize and equip people to accomplish the mission and vision of Hillside.”
As it is often said, “Hillside is not a church with small groups; it is a church of small groups.
But the reality is that the idea of joining a new small group can feel intimidating or overwhelming to so many. The idea of joining a new small group can raise questions like:
- “How do I know what group to join?”
- “What is a small group like?”
- “Where do I even start?!”
Small Group Launch exists to help provide answers to these questions!
Pastor Derek Brokke and two of Launch’s leaders—Tara Hammett and Lee Nelson—took a few minutes to tell us a little more about what Launch is and who it’s for, and why it might be a great option for you.
Q: What is Small Group Launch? What is its purpose?
Pastor Derek: Small Group Launch is an ongoing, open group for those looking to join a small group at Hillside. At Launch, you will connect with other Hillsiders who are ready to join small groups, learn about the small groups ministry, experience types of studies you may use in a small group, and ultimately get connected to your long term group. Launch is designed for those who are looking for a long term group, but are ready to connect with others in a small group context right away.
Q: How long would you expect someone to be a part of Small Group Launch? Is it a 5-week commitment, would the plan on attending indefinitely, or….?
Lee: Launch plans to be an ongoing opportunity throughout the year on Wednesday evenings, running on five-week cycles. But it's very flexible! You can join at any time during the five week cycle. Regardless of when you join, you will get the most out of Launch by attending five consecutive weeks. Our goal is by the end of those five weeks with us, you will have made valuable connections and given us a chance to help you find an existing Small Group - or be a part of forming a new one.
Q: What are some great things about Small Group Launch?
Lee: Launch is a welcoming space for all people. It's often multi-generational, spans a range of demographics and is the perfect spot for those wanting to merge into a Hillside Small Group or just be more plugged in at Hillside in general.
Tara: My favorite thing about Launch is that it helps new people feel connected and have a sense of belonging at Hillside very quickly! They can walk through the halls on a Sunday morning and see familiar faces and be known. That’s a great feeling when you’re new to a church!
Q: Why would you encourage people to sign up for Launch?
Tara: If you are interested in joining a small group, switching small groups, or just learning more about small groups, Launch is the best place to start! We will spend time getting to know you so that we can recommend a small group that fits you well.
